Hugh Birkett. A large handmade sculptural Yew wood Thebes stool with double wedge through tenon joints to the top on opposing sides to the cane seat. In the style of Liberty & Co. Stamped "19 H.B. 69", circa 1969. Hugh Birkett was taught by Oliver Morel, another master furniture maker and tutor who worked in the Cotswold style from Herefordshire. Oliver Morel had studied under Edward Barnsley, who was taught by his father Sidney Barnsley and Ernest Gimson at Sapperton. Birkett moved to Morton-in-Marsh in 1966, where this Thebes stool was made in 1969.
