A W N Pugin Attributed.
An exceptional Gothic Revival oak centre table. The Octagonal top with moulded edge and a conforming octagonal central upright support joining an arched under tier which are let into the legs exposing those joints. The lower part of the central upright, has the precise Pugin style moulded details to the chairs he designed for the House of Lords, with four radiating stretchers with subtle trefoil carved details, out swept feet resting on inset cup castors. An honest unmolested example in outstanding original condition.
When one looks at the overall form of the table, it’s inherent features relate almost undeniably to AWN's hand.
The last three images attached are of three slightly differing chairs that Pugin designed for the House of Lords for comparison which show the notable AWN details that this table possesses.
1. The moulded edge to the top is in his repertoire.
2. The moulded detail to the lower central support (as mentioned above) is identical to the front legs of the parliament chairs.
3. The out swept back legs have similarity, and the inset cup castors are a detail AWN consistently used on tables and chairs.
4. The 45 degree chamfered architectural details to most of the edges of this table he used consistently all ending with stop end chamfer or sometimes known as birds beak end details.
5/6. The least amount of carving and exposed honest construction all point to his hand.
