G.M.Ellwood and J.S.Henry

George Montague Ellwood (1875-1955) Artist, Designer and Interior Decorator was born in 1875 and educated at Holloway Art School and later studied in Paris, Berlin, Dresden and Vienna and at Camden School of Art from 1916 to 1924. In 1897 he won the gold medal for his furniture designs at the National Competition, South Kensington. He was one of the founding members of the 'Guild of Art Craftsmen', Ellwood's designs for J S Henry were exhibited at the 1900 Paris Exhibition and won a silver medal, one of two the firm were awarded. He exhibited at a number of venues between 1899 and 1915, including four times at the Royal Academy.Ellwood also designed for Bath Cabinetmakers and the Bristol based firm of Trapnell and Gane. He later traded as Ellwood and Sledmere (late with J.S. Henry Ltd) at 53 Mortimer Street, London. He designed posters for the London Underground Group between 1912 and 1914 now displayed at The Transport Museum. He became editor of Drawing and Design Journal and in later years continuing his life's work he wrote several knowledgeable books on drawing and design and also advertising.

An Arts and Crafts Oak sideboard attributed to G M Ellwood made by Bath Cabinet Makers, with stained glass panels to the upper right hand cupboard, and stylised floral inlaid details with Tulip wood, Stained Sycamore and Walnut above the work area and to the cupboard door, and hand made handles. With an unusual but handy slide that gives you extra serving area which pulls out from just below the centre of the main work area.

George Montague Ellwood. Made by Bath Cabinet Makers. A rare Arts and Crafts oak sideboard with eight matching dining chairs. The sideboard with elongated slatted sides, heart cut-outs and stylised Ebony and Pewter inlays to the back and to the lower doors matching the eight dining chairs which retain their original leather seats.
I will sell the dining table separately it is not original to the above set. We have a number of quality extending dining tables in stock. (See dining tables page).

George Montague Ellwood (1875-1955) for J.S. Henry, an oak writing desk with sloping pen compartment just above the writing area flanked by stylised inlaid details of a pair of Quills in ink pots the inlays of fruitwoods and copper, with fold out divided letter compartments to each upper side, a well designed extended writing area with a pair of drawers below with open bookcases to each side. The handles to the pen, letter compartments and to the drawers are after a design by C.F.A. Voysey, who also designed for J.S. Henry.
